Why Review My Credential?
Your post-secondary institution or employer may review credentials you've already earned for a number of reasons, such as if you:
- Use your credential to meet admission requirements for a post-secondary program at another institution (such as diploma programs that require an undergraduate degree for admission)
- Earned your credential outside of Alberta and use it to apply to a graduate program at an Alberta post-secondary institution (such as moving from an undergraduate to a graduate degree program)
- Earned your credential at a post-secondary institution that is not licensed or certified by the Government of Alberta
Are moving to Alberta from another province or country for work in a field that requires industry certification (such as skilled trade certificates or health and other professions professions guided by provincial regulatory body)
How Credentials Are Assessed
How your credential is assessed depends on if you are using it for admission to a post-secondary institution or for employment. These assessments usually cost money and take time to complete, making it important to plan ahead.
Post-Secondary Admission
Most post-secondary institutions run their own credential assessment programs that compare your credential to:
- Alberta quality standards
- Admission or certification requirements for your program of study
Contact your post-secondary institution for more information.
Employment
Regulated trades and occupations in Alberta are accredited by professional associations, who will compare your education to provincial standards. Here are the links for health and other professions that are regulated, and what steps you need to take to work in Alberta.
Other Ways to Receive Credit for Prior Learning
If the assessment finds that your credential does not meet provincial or program standards, you can consider Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR) for possible admission or transfer credit to a post-secondary program.
